CarniVOL - Celebrating 5 years of VFC

Nov 26, 2017. VFC volunteers started dropping into New Horizon Gurukul as early as 6AM. It was indeed a big day. More than 150 volunteers had worked for over two months to make this day a special one. The day was meant to mark a milestone in the history of VFC. After all, VFC was turning five!

In November 2012, with 6 energetic volunteers, Volunteer For a Cause (VFC) started as a humble initiative supporting kids at a children home. And today, 5 years later, VFC supports more than 12 causes and has over 3000 registered volunteers.

For those who are new to VFC, here is a list of cause supported:

  • Birthday Jingles – celebrating birthdays of kids at children’s home

  • Challenge Accepted – supporting specially abled

  • Deshruth – spreading awareness on the richness of our country

  • Dhvani Granth – recording books for blind

  • IPS – Improvement of Public Sanitation

  • LibReady – encouraging reading habit in kids

  • Meet the Paws – supporting animal welfare

  • Pen Pals – Voluntary writers for the blind students

  • Reloading Green – spreading awareness on environment protection and preservation

  • TraffiKnights – spreading traffic awareness

  • We Are Ready – WAR – supporting healthy living.

To celebrate the growth and cherish the volunteering spirit, all VFC volunteers came together to create a memorable day for more than 250 senior citizens, kids and specially abled.

The preparation for day started in early September. A core team to plan the day was formed. And after a number of brainstorming sessions, the final plan for the day was drafted and various teams were formed to take on different responsibilities. An art team was formed to take care of venue decoration, a cultural team was formed to look into cultural activities. The transport team was responsible for arranging transport for the beneficiaries on the CarniVOL day and the hospitality team was formed to welcome and engage the beneficiaries throughout the day. Many other teams were formed to take care of other arrangements.

Once the teams were formed, the team members started working on the tasks assigned to them. While some volunteers got busy preparing charts and other decoration materials, the others worked on preparing activities and games for the beneficiaries. And the dancers in the team rehearsed their steps.

After 3 months of vigorous and dedicated preparations, volunteers were all ready for the final showdown. On 26th of Nov, the beneficiaries started dropping into the venue one by one and the volunteers warmly welcomed them.

After the breakfast, all beneficiaries gathered in the auditorium for the inauguration. The event started with a prayer dance by Nidhi.

The chief guests for the day and other dignitaries lighted the lamp and officially inaugurated the event.

After inauguration, the kids and elders were escorted to the play area where volunteers had set up several game stalls. Here is a glimpse of activities that followed:

By the time all the games were played, hot lunch was ready in the kitchen. The volunteers served the food with love and the kids and elders savoured it.

The afternoon session of the CarniVOL saw the beneficiaries take on the stage to showcase their talent. A few sang, a few danced, and a few others shared their experience. And all of the performances made every one in the audience cheer with joy.

While sharing his experience, one of the elder man said – “I don’t need this walking stick anymore! VFC volunteers have filled me with so much energy that I feel young again. They have also taught us another important lesson – you are happy when you make others happy.”

It was indeed a meaningful day for all volunteers who worked hard to create a memorable day for the elders, kids and specially abled.
